The successor technology to Parallel SCSI, Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) builds on proven SCSI functionality by offering many improved features, such as drive addressability up to 4032 devices per port (instead of 15) and reliable point-to-point serial connections at speeds of up to 3 Gbits/sec.
Additionally, due to the compact interconnect design, SAS can offer full dual-port connection to both 3.5" and 2.5" hard disk drives, particularly useful in blade server applications.
The SAS connector is compatible with SATA, therefore SATA drives will plug directly into SAS connectors and, if supported by the system will be able to perform as expected. The SSP protocol can query the device to ascertain whether the drive is SAS or SATA and respond appropriately. SAS drives, however, have a keyed connector to prevent them being plugged inappropriately into a SATA connection.
Devices required to use both SAS and SATA will normally handle the two protocols via a universal SAS backplane, providing connectivity to both.
Many SAS drives incorporate a dual port facility using a 29 way connector (15 circuits power + 7 signal + 7 signal) allowing Serial Attached SCSI to incorporate a wider range of applications.
